The check things really depend on your major (not on your visa type). If you happen to work on some "sensitive" fields, you might have to go through the security check. It used to take several months, but now it is much faster( a couple of weeks) to get the response from the embassy. I used to go back to China once a year with H1B visa before I applied for the GC. Because I am a physicist, I unfortunately had to go through the security check every time I applied for the re-entry H1B visa. I had never been turned down although I sometimes had to wait for the check results.
