thank you letter after phone interview?

I sent a resume about 40days ago. And I got a phone call yesterday afternoon. I am wondering whether I needed to send him a thank you letter.
I got his name and phonenumber during the phone call. I forgot to ask the email address, but googled it out. Is it proper to send an email to him?
Another thing is, actually I was unprepared when I got the phone call. And it was my first time. I don't think I did well on it. I didn't mention a lot of related work I have done. And the calling person was the department hiring manager (not HR person). So I am thinking about making a pdf file of diagrams of the spectroscopy systems I have constructed, so that they can have more idea about what I am doing and it is more than what I mentioned in the call. Will it be ok? I am a little bit unsure whether it will be too much and then make me annoying.

补充一下。
这个电话只打了10来分钟。有技术问题，和什么时候能上班及visa之类的。感觉上他只希望听到很短的回答。可我是第一次，事先没有任何消息， 我也没有任何准备，好像说多了，而且第一句话没有说到点子上。我原以为他们肯定是把我filter out, 因为都一个多月了， 没人和回音。不过job 和我的背景很match。
刚刚看别人说一般，电话面世会直接安排onsite interview. 是不是我没戏了？我表现的确不太好。。。

我是很想要这样的工作，好几个月就找到这样一个openning，还related我现在做的。我至今也只投了这一份（其他的都差得太远）。我原以为一个月没消息就是没戏了，都开始准备找postdoc了。。。
sigh, 我应该时刻准备着的。。。
