只有out of status才必回国的. J1有规定三年以后要回国服务两年, 所以美国一般不会给延期的. 除非有waivor.

问题是J1按规定不可以直接拿绿卡. 绿卡是永久居留的意愿, J1要求必须回国服务两年. 如果这个限制没有解除, 永久居留是没有根据的. 这和F, H, O, L都不一样的地方, 这些没有commitment.
Number of paper is not that important. The most important thing is your research interest and importance to American, I believe.
