Not all of the American universities and colleges are authorized to enroll international students who are in F1 status. Authorized schools can issue I-20 on behalf of USCIS. The school that you have contacted must not have the eligibility to enroll F1 students, just because it is not authorized by USCIS, not because it is a nurse school.

You have the alternatives to change status to H4 on which you can study and can enjoy in-state tuition waiver, or to find out other nurse schools which are authorized to enroll F1 students.

By the way, although OPT is the extension of F1 status, it cannot be used to continue academic study; it is a kind of work permit, can only be used to work.

Thanks for your reply. As for studying under OPT, it is impossible? We can stay at home during OPT if job is not found, but we can't register for class?

OPT is one of the bases for the issuance of EAD. It is impossible to study under OPT. If you want to register for a new program, you will have to get new I-20. If job is not found, you can stay at home for up to 12 months, plus 2-month grace period. Pursuant to the new USCIS policy, one can apply for status change during the grace period.

What if I only take some courses as a non-matriculated student?

While working during the period of OPT, you can register for classes as non-matriculated student. At this point, you are not a full time student;and you cannot earn student resident credits.

To register as non-matriculated student, you have to show your I-20 and OPT card, which indicate your current F1 status, and that you have completed your USCIS-approved program.

OPT card, as a work permit, by itself alone, cannot allow you to register for classes. You must have an updated i-20 for new program either full time (job not found, get new i-20 to maintain F1 status) or part time (non-matriculated).

Please also note that F1 students cannot register as part time students for their USCIS-approved programs.

Thanks for your detailed explaination. I think I won't go to the school that doesn't sponsor F1. Currently, I am taking one course during F1. I am still doing thesis continuation, so my status is F1. They didn't ask me to show anything. I also asked for studying in OPT, they only need me to show I-94. Anyway, I will try to find another school.
