Usually there should be an association for your major, like American Society of Mechanical Engineers. The associaiton should have major magzines. Yes, there are free advertising websites, but I personally dont think it counts too much.

I did ad on my company's website, two sundays on the local newspaper, and a major professional journal(which seems to be required).
