Ford: Environmentally Friendly and Ready to Race
The debut of the Ford Escape Hybrid could be called one of the longest vehicle launches in history. After a number of delays, the Dearborn-based automaker is finally bringing this sport-utility vehicle to market. And it looks as though the wait was worth it.

To prove the capabilities of this hybrid SUV, Ford had an Escape drive through Manhattan for 37 hours; it covered almost 600 miles on one tank of fuel. This equates to an average of 38 miles per gallon through hours of horrible New York traffic. Most impressive for an SUV.

When it goes on sale this summer, not only will the Escape Hybrid be the first hybrid SUV to hit the market, it will also be the first full-hybrid system to be produced in North America.

Although the Escape will be Ford's first hybrid on the market, it certainly will not be the last. Ford Motor Company officials announced that the Mercury Mariner—the new twin of the Escape—will be available as a hybrid in 2006. The company also is planning a hybrid version of its new midsize sedan, which will replace the aging Ford Taurus model line.

Pricing for the new Escape Hybrid has not been released, nor have official EPA fuel economy figures. Both should be announced in the next few months.
