Keeping coral reef is a very popular hobby over here in US. I started three years ago. have read lot of books and done lots of research too. it has cost me lots of time and money. my first time seeing those alive corals in aquarium. their variety of colors and forms impressed me a lot. finally i decided to try to keep them myself, and after a long time of trial, I made it. Now i'm a expert of keeping coral reef. If you have any question or wanna know more about the corals, feel free to let me know.

water once a month. all the corals i keep in my tank are from 2 to 6
inch in size, not very big. Corals need to be fed periodicly with micro
food, calcium, iodine, strongnium and etc. as know, salt water will
smell bad very quick wtihout any treatment. We use a device, callled
Protein Skimmer, to skim out the bad stuff out the water in order to
keep the high water quality. Most of corals need extreamly high
lighting to grow just like the green plants. I keep my tanks under
1500W of lighting, which is huge amount of light.

It has cost me about $5000 to set them up including, lighting, water pump, protein skimmer, sand base, and live rocks. It has taken me about a month for my tank to cycle, and get ready to begin introducing some easy corals. I set my three tanks in my basement. My average monthly cost is about $50.00. Though I'm fraging my corals and selling them on ebay priodically. So I'm making some money now. Hopefully answered all your questions.
