Just read burlington3 mm's post and am wondering why homestead can save "$500".
I think Homestead can only protect you if you have a lot of credit card debt. Even that, if there is big mortgage balance on the house, we don't even own the house, then nobody can take the house away before the mortgage bank.

她说的是房地产税里面的homestead exemption。这个exemption是在你的房子的市场价上减掉的一个数，每个郡之间是否一样我不知道。这样一来，你的房地产税 = (房子的市场价 - homestead exemption) x 税率。那个mm说的省了500就是homestead exemption x 税率。
这个exemption只能用在你的primary residence上。每年年初要交一个表格，证明1月1日起你是住在这里的，到时候寄给你的tax assessment会自动帮你算好exemption之后的税。
你想的那个homestead是破产法里面的。
