If I were you, I would go ahead donate these clothes since you are not going to wear them. Charitable organizations such as goodwill, salvation army, etc. will clean them up, either sell them in thrift stores at minimum price, or distribute them to unfortunate people are in great need of clothes.

It is great to get tax benefits by donating your clothes. Even if there aren’t any tax benefits available, I will still encourage you to donate your clothes if you can and are willing. Being able to help people out is a great feeling!

You can claim the donation(s) as a deduction for your 2006 federal return, if you are eligible for itemized deduction (1040 or 1040 NR) and you ARE better off taking the itemized deduction. Just keep your donation receipts. See my post below for how to determine the value of your donated items.

IRS Publication 561 is a guideline for determining the value of donated property, include used clothes. The specific explanation on used clothes is as follows:

“Used clothing and other personal items are usually worth far less than the price you paid for them. Valuation of the items of clothing does not lend itself to fixed formulas or methods.

The price that buyers of used items actually pay in used clothing stores, such as consignment or thrift shops, in an indication of the value.

What this really means is that the amount you can claim as a noncash deduction is the fair value of the clothes that you donate. The fair value is the retail price that you would have to pay in a second-hand clothing store for the identical clothes. For example, you bought a Ralph Lauren coat for $500 a few years ago but it no longer fits you. So you turn around and donate it to Goodwill. In the Goodwill thrift store or a second-hand clothing store, an identical coat is marked as $150, then the fair value of your donation is $150. This amount is also the amount of your deduction. Does that make sense?
