Someone told me it's cheap to manage your own 401k instead of through your
company---Meaning you have financial institute manage your 401k instead of your
company have financial institute manage your 401k.
Any thoughts?

I don't understand. Your 401k has to be managed through your company, isn't it? Meaning you can only use the finacial institute your company has chosen
You can pick a finiancial insitute for other retirment account, like IRA or Roth IRA

Generally, you company doesn't manage you portfolio. Some mutual fund does.
