She is very knowledgeable on many different brands of sewing machines; how they work; what works best for people; and how to find a quality machine at any price point. I, sadly, did not get her sewing-gene, so am a total layperson. First, my impressions: Singer used to be "the" sewing machine to get. I remember my mom sewing with them when I was a child. This machine, out of the box, looked rather cheap and cheesy--almost as if they were trying too hard to make it look like something it's not. The "chrome" wheel is plastic and flimsy. The LCD screen is nearly illegible and I couldn't figure it out at all. It is very lightweight, but this is not a good thing--it seems unstable. Onto my mom's impression: Concerns: She shares my impression that the machine is flimsy, but the light weight could be a plus for some people. The space to the right of the needle is quite small--too small and creates issues vis-a-vis working area. It advertises "extra large working space", however the small space to the right of the needle is so small, medium and large projects will be difficult if not impossible. The extra space is placed to the left of the needle, where it is unnecessary. Most of the 14.7" is to the left of that needle. (You can see this from the pictures.) Most "extra large spaces" for sewing are to the right, and average about 11". The threading is odd. Most machines have a two-part threading process with two slots in the front of the machine, making it simple to load.
