Asset and income are two concepts. As immigrants, we are usually high in income but low in asset. For some Americans, they have assets, but their income may not be that substantial. Medina, the town where bill gates lives, the medium family income is just about 13w-14w a few years ago when I checked, and medium housing price is in the range of several millions. And the medium family income of another suburb in Seattle is way higher than Medina, but medium housing price is less than a million.

For most people, higher income leads to assets accumulation. Low income and low assets, means you are at the bottom regardless of how you phrase it.
