NEW YORK - Topping the headlines at midday, Hewlett-Packard said it's cutting 14,500 jobs, or about 10% of its workforce, as part of its restructuring.

The cuts, which are expected to save $1.9 billion annually, will mainly come from support functions such as information technology, human resources and finance. The company also plans to overhaul its retirement program. The move comes as HP (nyse: HPQ - news - people ) tries to better compete with its rivals such as Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ).
