There is always a tradeoff between brand new homes and old ones especially here in NorCal. The new homes here are actually called "patio homes", ie. they normally only have a very small patio so the lot sizes are normally less than 3000 sf. The old homes here, especially really old ones (like 50+ years old) have much larger lot sizes, like 8000 - 1/2 acre. So old homes here actually have better investment values, because the land in bay area is less and less so owning a bigger land is better than a small one from the investment point of view.

In addition, Bay Area has a relatively long history, so normally old homes have better geographical locations.
