We had a friend bought a house, the previous owner of which is from India. The smell is ... what can I say, no offence, like many pair of never washed and heavily used running shoes. They tried aromatic candles, essential oil (I bought it for them), spray. They also cleaned(it was clean but they wiped it with clorox disinfectant wipe again) the pantry that the previous owner store their seasoning stuff and all the kitchen cabinet. There is no immediate dramatic change after all the clean-up, but the old smell dimmed way little by little. Now it's been several month. We can't smell anything from Indian in their house now.

So, my point is -- if the origin of the smell is not from mildew or other construction problem, you CAN clean them all up. Just need to be patient, and sometimes try to forget how annoying it is.
