I think $300 payment is fine，I always do that if I have "return credit" (like that $200 in your post) before due date. (AMEX)

I remember it's Huangniluo MM who posted her experience on fashion board. in that case, statement balance was several thousands, and she returned about $1000, hence the website showed "minimum due is 0" (typically minimum due is just around 10~20% of whole balance, so less than $1000), then she thought she was OK but actually she didn't pay off the whole balance. so got fanancial charge in the next statement.
