I will recommend getting a house in the 300k-400k range. If your income is only 100k before tax, then you will feel a lot of pressure when you get a 500k house. You need a reliable car down the road, eventually you will need to send your kid to preschool, and then when he reaches school age you will need to pay for all those curriculum lessons, and most importantly you want to still enjoy your life. We live in Houston, which is a pretty cheap place compare to other mms. Our house is close to 400k, then we spent about 20k on various renovation projects and 40k on furnitures and electronics. I am glad that we did not get a 500k house, so I can still drive a nice car and enjoy shopping for clothes every other day :-) Our combined income is significantly higher than 100k, and since we only have 150k loan, I want to pay the house off in 3 years. I think quality of life does make a difference in Houston.

我家的情况是我LG一个人工作，年收入勉强税前8万不到一点，每个月到手四千五朝上，五千不到。三年之内基本上不会长工资了，但是五年之内基本不会掉饭碗。有一辆车，每个月也就150块车贷。一年内要考虑买第二辆车，首付会很少，也要靠车贷。存款很少，买房基本上要零首付了。而且我马上想上学，一年怎么也要花一万多学费。有个小孩要养，年底想送DAYCARE。
往少了算，攒学费1000＋DAYCARE1000＋UTILITY汽油保险500＋伙食500＋杂费500，一个月也就到能剩个一千几百。其实我自己也知道就算买，我也就买个便宜的TH。可是你们说我该买房么？我老想着还要存点钱。
唉，都是为了小孩子。我也不考虑投资，APT住住也不错。我要是能早点工作就好了。
how come you gg can get that much after tax each month. my income is about the same as your gg, but after 401k, health incurance, health savings plan, and child daycare saving account, etc, i don't get that much compare to your gg... luckily, my gg can bring more $$$ home than I do... otherwise, I won't be able to shop for clothes after the mortgage and utility bills.

我们可能不买401K,学校的退休金计划放的少，然后目前还没把钱放到CHILD SAVING ACCOUNT里。这个就差不少了。穷就一个字呀。
