some brokages offer no-transaction-fee mutual funds if you hold it longer than 6 month. As long as you pick a no-load, low expense-ratio mutual fund, the maintainence fee would be minimal.

for the long run, the return on mutual fund should be much better than CD with the compounding.

Even I-bond (currently ~6-7%) is a better choice than CD.
