this is probably not because of the dollar amount of the check, but because of the fact that your account is a new account. When my initial deposit to my new citi checking account was on hold for 10 days too. i believe that is their policy. do you have any credit card that has lower apr on balance transfer, like 7.99 (anyway better than 29.99, right?) then you can probably use that option.
