I agree with you. My parents live on their own. My father learned to drive in his late 50s now he can drive around to go to stores, hospitals and meet with their friends as long as not long distant drive. We help out in areas they can't take care of on their own. So far the arrangement works out OK for everyone involved.
我周围的也基本是这样. Very few live with their parents under the same roof.

这都是被孩子惯的，我们社区阿姨60岁嫁老外拿身份还把子女办过来，这里学会开车，英语简单会一点也是来美国以后学的，又不是需要找工作水平，然后自己没事在老人活动中心，教堂，周边退休老人间混，开心快乐着呢，子女有时候需要帮助她过去帮帮，平时就是自己玩。房子是几个子女一起出钱买的，将来遗嘱也是几个子女平分。

Re. Unless they come here in their late 70s otherwise I don't see why they can't learn some basic skills to be on their own. It's better for everyone in a long run.

所谓的老人不也就是6，70岁吗？看看英语培训班里这个岁数的大有人在，连电脑普及班里都有拄拐杖的老外，不学就别移民过来养老，在国内呆着子女给钱请保姆完了，每个家庭这种过度都不容易，大家都要付出，尽量减轻他人负担。

碰到我公婆这种买得起房子会开车也愿意并且积极学英语，但就是非要跟我们住一个屋檐下的也没辙……
