Also, what kind of term are you look at? Is the money going to be invested long-term? Or do you need the money at some point in near future...too many unknowns makes answering this question a little difficult.

to make it a little easier, what about for short-term investment, say 1/2~2 yrs, definitely need the money back in 5 yrs, and can only tolerate moderate risks?

that's a really short time frame. and if you need the whole principle back in 1/2-2 years, your choice pretty much bonds/savings.
