just few things wanna list here:

-if you filing status is non-resident alien, then you cannot itemize deduction, which means the donation wont be helpful from the tax perspective;

-you may also read info on schedule A or more detailed in pub 526;

-pub 78 for list of most qualified organizations (churches, Salvation Army, United Way, etc.)
