That's a very good article regarding the home equity line.
Some additional thoughts, when you are taking the home equity line of credit, you will have to pay off at a higher rate (prime rate plus a margin) as pointed out in the article. It appears to be rational that you put the extra money on hand into your investment account. Besides, it looks to me that it's rather expensive to establish and maintain the home equit line.
Read that article to begin with and lay out advantages and disadvantages, then you will come up with a better idea.
I have a similar question on home equity line. I don't think the article answers the question. The question is not whether or not to open a home equity line. The question is, after open a home equity line, should we put all the cash we have in the home equity line to avoid paying the high interest as much as possible? Anyone did that? We have not done it yet. I just thought it was not as fast/convenient as the regular checking/saving account.
of course, if you have extra cash, pay off home equity line first. Unless you are sure you can have something better return than prime rate, right now is about 8%.
We don't have extra cash, so we have to play around our home equity line
the interest rate will change for home equity line, which creates risk for you.
