Those who were against the SS reform are poor people, not senior people. Bush has made it very clear that the reform won't change the benefit for those people. the new plan only affect young people.
I am not saying the current SS is good system, I am just saying it won't collapse so soon as Bush claimed. I don't think SS is in big trouble now. I drew such conclusion not because I have any solid evidence. My feeling is, if it's really in trouble, both parties would try to fix it righ away. However it's only used as a tool for some political benefit for each party now.
If SS system really collapsed, poor people would be impacted more. However democratic party, as the representative of poor people, stopped Bush from doing any change to SS. This thing itself shows that SS is not in trouble.
I felt in this country, news reporters always try to create some 'hype' on anything they reported, from SS collapsing to global warming. Do we still remember how they described the world would be when Y2k comes? We were supposed to live in big chaos. did we?
global warming I am completely with you on that.
however, for ss and medicare etc, my understanding is on the opposite side. because it is in deep trouble, that's why it can not be easily fixed or can not even be touched because so many resistances.
SS based on the assumption that, people have 20(have to check the number, but something like that) after retirement, and more people enter labor force than people retire. it's basically a pyramid system. none of those assumptions holds any more. highly industrilize makes people have less babies, and with modern science, people live much longer now. so we basically have something that doomed to collapse sometime in the future. How can we fix it? force people for have more babies, or prolong the working time of individual. retire after 70 maybe.
remember there used to be pensions? it didn't work any more, so ss was created. ss will not work at some point, government will create something else, well 401k is sort of something that created to deal with retirement problem, isn't it?
and btw, i strongly disagree with u on the "However democratic party, as the representative of poor people". politicians just want to be re-elected. whichever side they see fit.
First of all, no one knows WHEN the system is going to collapse. I guess at some point in future, the goverment will dedudct more % for SS and medicare, or simply raise the deduction cap on the income (currently 90k income/year?). of course the rich people wouldn't like it. but they have to -- to ensure the stable society, most likely the rich people have to sacrifice a bit.
And for my last point, of course the democratic party represent poor people. There is no secret in it. Each party has to follow consistent policy to have a loyal voter group. They often adjust policy a bit only to get more middle-class swing voters.
